    Accident: 14432462 - Dies After Fall From Horse

    On April 16, 1998, Employee #1 fell from a horse and hit his head, sustaining blunt force trauma. He was found unconscious in a pasture and declared brain dead two days later.

    Accident: 14335913 - Two Farm Workers Drown In Pond

    Employees #1 and #2 were outside tending dairy cows in a remote section of a farm. Employee #1 was riding a horse and Employee #2 was driving a tractor. When the men were found to be missing, a search party was sent out and discovered the dead horse floating in an animal cooling pond. Divers recovered the bodies of the two men, who had drowned in the pond. Circumstantial evidence indicated that the Employee #1, who could not swim, rode his horse into a deep portion of the pond. Employee #2, who had removed his wallet and notepad and left his vehicle running, entered the water in an apparent attempt to rescue Employee #1.

    Accident: 170613715 - Cowboy'S Thumb Amputated When Caught By Rope Knot

    At approximately 1:00 p.m. on July 11, 1995, Employee #1, a cowboy, was attempting to tie a horse in a stall for shoeing. The horse spooked and Employee #1's left thumb was pinched in a half hitch on the lead rope. The thumb was amputated at the knuckle. He was hospitalized.

    Accident: 170022867 - Killed When Dragged By Runaway Horse

    Employee #1 was dragged by a runaway horse as he was holding onto its lead rope while the horse was feeding. He died.

    Accident: 14479687 - Exercise Rider Crushed To Death When Horse Fell On Her

    EMPLOYEE #1 WAS EMPLOYED AS AN EXERCISE RIDER FOR RACE HORSES AT THE LAUREL RACE TRACK, LAUREL, MARYLAND. THE HORSE SHE WAS EXERCISING TRIPPED OR STUMBLED, CAUSING THE EMPLOYEE TO BE THROWN OVER THE HORSE'S HEAD TO THE TRACK SURFACE. THE HORSE (WEIGHING ABPUT ()) POUNDS) FLIPPED OVER AND LANDED ON HER, CRUSHING HER. THE ACCIDENT HAPPENED BETWEEN GAP GATE #2 AND THE KITCHEN. THE EMPLOYEE WAS WEARING ALL REQUIRED PPE, INCLUDING A TIPPERARY BODY PROTECTOR (FLAK JACKET) AND A HELMET. THE EMPLOYEE DIED OF SEVERE INTERNAL INJURIES AND INTERNAL BLEEDING.

    Accident: 170190839 - Injured When Trampled By Runaway Horse

    On December 15, 1993, Employee #1 was in the office of the horse trainer when he heard a commotion and ran from the office. He was told that one of the horses had bolted and had run between a long row of buildings. As Employee #1 ran toward the building, the horse came around the corner at a full run. Employee #1 positioned himself in front of the horse and started to wave his arms trying to turn the horse back toward the stables. The horse did not turn, slow, or stop. Employee #1 was trampled by the horse and sustained severe head injuries as well as scrapes and bruises. He was transported to Huntington Memorial Hospital.

    Accident: 170237994 - Dies After Presumed Fall From Horse

    At approximately 10:30 a.m. on June 1, 1993, employees discovered Employee #1, a dressage instructor, lying unconscious on a hard gravel roadway between two horse barns. It is presumed that she either fell from or with the horse that was found saddled and riderless nearby. As a result, she suffered a closed head trauma and died 8 days later from brain stem herniation due to diffuse cerebral edema. Employee #1 was estimated to be 5 months pregnant at the time of the accident. The baby died of premature delivery at the time of the mother's death. Though the farm had ASTM approved horse riding helmets available, Employee #1 was not wearing one at the time of the accident.

    Accident: 512020 - Injured When Kicked By Horse

    At approximately 9:00 a.m. on September 18, 1992, Employee #1 hooked a horse up to the hot walker as he faced the horse, and then turned to go to the walker gate. The horse twirled around and kicked him on the left side of his back. Employee #1 sustained multiple fractures and injuries, and was hospitalized.

    Accident: 960179 - Dies Of Horse Disease

    Employee #1 was performing an autopsy on a horse with coccidioiolomycosis (valley fever). He contracted the disease when he inhaled tissue phase endospores that were aerosolized while he was dissecting the horse. Employee #1 died.

    Accident: 170161780 - Killed When Kicked By Racetrack Horse

    Employee #1, a racetrack groom, was walking horse A to cool him off after an exercise period. They approached horse B, who was having his hooves washed while being held by a coworker. Heavy rains had created a large puddle between barns, causing Employee #1 to walk horse A closer than normal to horse B. Horse B tried to kick horse A, but instead kicked Employee #1 in the chest and abdomen with both rear hooves. Employee #1 was killed.

    Accident: 521138 - Killed When Thrown From Horse

    Employee #1 was riding a horse back to a ranch barn when it bolted and ran into a wire fence that was approximately 300 yards away. The employee was thrown approximately 30 feet over the fence, landing on her head and chest. She sustained a concussion and internal bleeding and was killed.

    Accident: 170197099 - Breaks Arm, Ruptures Lung In Fall From Wooden Horse

    AT APPROXIMATELY 10:00 A.M. ON NOVEMBER 14, 1990, EMPLOYEE #1 WAS STANDING ON A WOODEN HORSE (A METAL FRAME APPROXIMATELY 3 FEET IN HEIGHT AND 6 FEET IN LENGTH, SUPPORTED BY AN A-FRAME CONFIGURATION ON BOTH ENDS). EMPLOYEE #1 WAS IN THE PROCESS OF "HANGING" SHEETROCK TO THE CEILING OF THE SECOND FLOOR OF A RESIDENTIAL CONSTRUCTION, WHEN HE LOST HIS BALANCE AND FELL APPROXIMATELY 15 FEET TO THE CONCRETE FLOOR ON THE FIRST LEVEL. EMPLOYEE #1 SUFFERED A BROKEN RIGHT ARM AND RUPTURED LUNGS. THE LACK OF A GUARDRAIL CONTRIBUTED TO THE ACCIDENT.

    Accident: 14238091 - Dies Of Brain Hemorrhage After Fall

    At approximately 8:00 a.m. on September 18, 1990, Employee #1, age 77, fell from a horse while opening a gate. He remained conscious and reported the fall to his boss. Employee #1 was transported home, where he remained for approximately 1 hour. He was than taken by his wife to the hospital in Elko. After being examined by doctors there, he was flown to University Medical Center in Salt Lake City. Employee #1 died on September 23, 1990 of a reported brain hemorrhage. There were no signs of external trauma.
