  • Disability Overview

    A disabled person is a person who is restricted from doing an everyday task or has trouble completing such a task. Many people who are in some way restricted by a disability are discriminated against, and this is known as ableism. Various terms are used to refer to people with some form of restriction, with the most common term being handicapped.

    Physical Disability - Mobility Impairement

    These are conditions resulting in restricted movement, and inlcuding Paralysis, amputation (especially of limbs), Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, Cerebral Palsy, Muscular dystrophy, Arthritis, Rheumatoid arthitis, Osteoarthritis or Stroke.

    Physical Disability - Visual Impairement

    These are conditions that restrict sight and the ability to see. They include Blindness, Low vision, Color blindness and Cataract.

    Physical Disability - Hearing Impairement

    These are conditions that may restrict the sense of hearing and sound. They inlcude Chronic disease, Cancer, AIDS, Renal failure, Cystic fibrosis, Tuberculosis, Diabetes, Hypoglycemia and Chronic fatigue syndrome.

    Physical Disability - Other Impairements

    Other conditions that may cause a physical disability or restriction are spinal cord injuries or traumatic injuries to the brain.

    Mental Disability - Phobias

    Phobias are fears of certain things. Almost everyone suffers from some form of this impairement. The most common phobias are Arachnophobia, Anthrophobia, Aerophobia, Agoraphobia, Claustrophobia, Acrophobia, Cancerophobia, Astraphobia, Necrophobia, Cardiophobia and Dental phobia.

    Mental Disability - Other Impairements

    Other mental disabilities include learning disability, Alzheimer's disease, Anxiety Disorder, depression, Bipolar disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and Schizophrenia.

    Developmental Disabilities

    Developmental disabilities include Dyslexia, Down syndrome, Attention-Deficit Disorder, Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Hyperactivity and Autism.

    Other Disabilities

    As a result of drug use, disabilities can be caused. These included Alcoholism, Nicotine addiction and other forms of drug addictions. Dementia is also a type of disability.
