  • Kidney Disorders

  • Kidney Disorders

The kidney is responsible for the filtration and excretion of various solutes present in blood plasma. This organ also functions to help maintain the body's pH level at around 7.4. Kidney disorders include the diseases that affect the normal function of the kidneys, as well as the possible consequences of such failure.

    Bartter's Syndrome

Bartter's Syndrome is a kidney disorder that results in loss of salt and potassium, urinary calcium, and metabolic alkalosis.

Bartter's Syndrome may affect one or more ion channels in the renal thick ascending limb. This results in diminished sodium reabsorption, coupled with hypokalemia, hypercalciuria, and metabolic alkalosis.

    Diabetes Insipidus

Diabetes insipidus is characterized by constitutively inadequate stimulation of ADH (antidiuretic hormone) in the kidneys. There are two variants of the disease. Central diabetes insipidus results from diminished or absent secretion of ADH by the posterior pituitary gland. Nephrogenic diabetes insipidus results from the lack of stimulation by normal levels of ADH on the V2 receptors of the renal collecting duct.

    Gitelman's Syndrome

Gitelman's Syndrome is a kidney disorder that results in loss of salt and potassium, and metabolic alkalosis.

Gitelman's Syndrome may result from a defect in the thiazide-sensitive sodium co-transporter (TSC) of the renal distal convoluted tubule, accounting for 5% of the renal sodium filtrate. This also results in hypokalemia and metabolic alkalosis.
