    Biaxin is an antibiotic similar to erythromycin. The active ingredient in Biaxin is clarithromycin. Biaxin and it's alternate brand, Biaxin XL (extended release) are available in tablet forms, and Biaxin is also available as granules to be taken as an oral suspension.


    Biaxin is used to treat infections, such as strep throat, pneumonia, sinusitis, tonsillitis, acute middle ear infections, infections of the skin, and can even treat duodenal ulcers when combined with Prevacid or Prilosec and amoxicillin.

    Possible Side Effects

    These side effects may not occur in everyone who takes Biaxin, but they are possible.

    More common

    Abdominal pain, abnormal taste, diarrhea, nausea, rash, vomiting

    Less common

    Headache, indigestion


    Allergic reactions, altered sense of smell, anxiety, behavior changes, confusion, convulsions, disorientation, dizziness, fungal infections of the mouth, hallucinations, hearing loss, inflammation of the mouth, liver problems, mental problems, nightmares, pancreatitis, ringing in the ears, sleeplessness, tongue discoloration or swelling, tooth discoloration, tremor, vertigo, very low blood sugar.


    Biaxin should not be taken be patients who are allergic to erythromycin or similar antibiotics such as Zithromax. Also, patients with a heart condition should not take Biaxin, nor while taking Orap, Propulsid, or Seldane.

    Possible Interactions

    Sometimes taking Biaxin with certain other medications may increase the frequency of side effects, as well as alter the effects of either medications. Check with your doctor before taking Biaxin if you are currently taking Alprazolam (Xanax); Blood thinners such as Coumadin; Bromocriptine (Parlodel); Carbamazepine (Tegretol); Cholesterol-lowering drugs such as Mevacor and Zocor; Cilostazol (Pletal); Cyclosporine (Sandimmune, Neoral); Digoxin (Lanoxin); Disopyramide (Norpace); Ergot-based migraine drugs such as Cafergot, DHE, Sansert, and Wigraine; Fluconazole (Diflucan); Hexobarbital; Methylprednisolone (Medrol); Midazolam (Versed); Phenytoin (Dilantin); Quinidine (Quinidex); Pimozide (Orap); Rifabutin (Mycobutin); Ritonavir (Norvir); Sildenafil (Viagra); Tacrolimus (Prograf); Theophylline (Slo-Phyllin, Theo-Dur, others); Triazolam (Halcion); Valproate (Depakene, Depakote); Zidovudine (Retrovir)
