    Epival is an anticonvulsant, and is used to control seizures. The active ingredient in Epival is divalproex sodium, which is chemically related to valproic acid. Epival is available in pill form, and is also available as an intravenous solution (Epiject IV).


    Epival is used primarily to treat simple and complex absence seizures, including petit mal seizures. It is also used to treat epilepsy, and acute mania in patients suffering from bipolar disorder.


    Epival should not be used as a mood stabilizer in persons under 18.

    Epival and other forms of divalproex sodium should not be used by patients with hepatic disease or severe hepatic dysfunction.

    More common side effects

    Abdominal or stomach cramps (mild); change in menstrual periods; diarrhea; hair loss; indigestion; loss of appetite; nausea and vomiting; trembling of hands and arms; unusual weight loss or gain

    Less common or rare side effects

    Clumsiness or unsteadiness; constipation; dizziness; drowsiness; headache; skin rash; unusual excitement, restlessness, or irritability

    Possible Interactions

    One should check with their doctor before taking Epival with any of the following types of medications.

    Acetaminophen (Tylenol); Amiodarone (Cordarone); Anabolic steroids (nandrolone [Anabolin], oxandrolone [Anavar], oxymetholone [Anadrol], stanozolol [Winstrol]); Androgens (male hormones); Barbiturates; Carbamazepine (Tegretol); Carmustine (BiCNU); Dantrolene (Dantrium); Daunorubicin (Cerubidine); Disulfiram (Antabuse); Estrogens (female hormones); Etretinate (Tegison); Gold salts (medicine for arthritis); Mercaptopurine (Purinethol); Methotrexate (Mexate); Methyldopa (Aldomet); Naltrexone (Trexan); Phenothiazines (acetophenazine [Tindal], chlorpromazine [Thorazine], fluphenazine [Prolixin], mesoridazine [Serentil], perphenazine [Trilafon], prochlorperazine [Compazine], promazine [Sparine], promethazine [Phenergan], thioridazine [Mellaril], trifluoperazine [Stelazine], triflupromazine [Vesprin], trimeprazine [Temaril]); Plicamycin (Mithracin); Antidepressants; Carbenicillin by injection (Geopen); Dipyridamole (Persantine); Inflammation or pain medicine, except narcotics, or Pentoxifylline (Trental); Sulfinpyrazone (Anturane); Ticarcillin (Ticar); Heparin; Mefloquine; Other anticonvulsants
