  • How Insurance Companies Determine Auto Rates

  • How Insurance Companies Determine Auto Rates

The rising cost of auto repairs and the skyrocketing cost of medical care affect the total cost of auto insurance, pushing premiums up every year.

If an insurance company wants to increase its rates, they must submit their request to the Office of the Insurance Commissioner. As part of their request, they must include enough financial information to justify the requested rate. If our rate analysts are satisfied with the facts provided, then we are obligated by law to approve the request.

In addition to requesting overall general rate adjustments, companies may also change the way their rates vary based on a specific driver's geographical area, claims history, age, etc.

Companies can rate all licensed drivers in the household — including the policyholder's spouse and any other member of the household, whether or not they are related by blood. This includes live-in roommates.

Auto insurance rates are based on a variety of factors. The amount you pay is made up of a "base rate," plus or minus certain amounts depending on your age, sex, marital status, driving pattern, claims history, geographical area, credit history, and the make, model, and year of your vehicle.

While the weight given to any factor differs from company to company, the following major factors are generally used by all companies:

    • Your age: Statistics show that drivers under age 30 are involved in more accidents than older people and are generally considered a higher risk. Families that have younger drivers in the household will often pay more for their insurance.
    • Your sex: State law allows insurance companies to discriminate on the basis of sex if that discrimination is based on statistical evidence that proves one sex is a higher risk. Statistically, young men — especially those under 30 — are involved in a disproportionate number of accidents and will often pay more for their insurance.
    • Marital status: Statistically, married couples have fewer accidents than singles, and therefore tend to have lower rates.
    • Your vehicle: Generally, the more expensive your vehicle, the more you will pay for comprehensive and collision coverage. Also, because sports cars and high-performance cars tend to get into more accidents, cost more to repair and are more likely to be stolen, they cost more to insure.
    • Your location: The higher number of accidents in a high density area will raise both your liability and collision premiums, while higher crime rates in urban areas can raise your comprehensive premiums. Companies base your rate on your address even though you may drive to a more urban or rural area.
    • Driving patterns: The more miles you drive, the higher your rates will be. A car used for a total of 7,000 miles a year would normally have lower rates than a car driven 15,000 miles a year. Companies will also look at how many miles you commute to work in addition to your average "non-commuting" miles.
    • Your driving record and your claims history: Most companies apply a surcharge to drivers who have been involved in an accident or have been convicted of serious traffic violations. Likewise, the more claims you've had, the higher your rates are likely to be.
    • Credit History: Your insurance company may use information from your credit history to determine an insurance score for you and ultimately, how much you will pay for coverage. They believe there's a statistical relationship between your score and the likelihood you'll file a claim in the future. However, companies are restricted from using certain credit information due to a recent state law.

Additional tips on how to save money on your insurance

Here are several ways to save money on car insurance while maintaining safe levels of coverage:

    • Shop around: Often, rates for the exact same coverage will vary from company to company. But cheaper is not always better. It's a good idea to talk with your agent about how much coverage you will keep you protected.
    • Check on cost before you buy a car: The type of car you own will impact how much you pay for insurance. Before you purchase a car, check with your agent to find out how much it will cost to insure the car you're thinking about buying.
    • Select higher deductibles: Your auto insurance is affected by the amount of the deductible you select. For example: Raising your collision and comprehensive deductibles from $100 to $500 can produce savings.
    • Special discounts: Ask your agent or company if they offer any special discounts. Often, discounts are available to young drivers who are good students or who have finished a driver's education course. Also, many companies will give you a discount on your auto premiums if you also insure your house through the same company.
    • Eliminate duplication: You may have an overlap in coverage, such as medical, collision, or uninsured motorist property damage. Ask your agent to explain your coverage and advise you if you're duplicating coverage.
    • Collision/comprehensive: If you don't think you could afford to fix your car yourself if you were involved in an accident you may want to carry collision and comprehensive coverage. These coverages are designed to protect owners of expensive and late-model automobiles against the cost of repairs.

Although this type of coverage may increase your rate, you may want to consider it if the difference in what you pay would exceed your ability to pay repair bills. Your lender may require this type of coverage until you've paid off your car.

Remember, companies differ in the skill, care and speed with which they settle customers' claims.
